Bot-free roundup

Best AI note takers without a bot (2026)

Direct answer

An AI note taker without a bot captures audio from your own device, browser tab, or system audio, so nothing new appears in the Zoom, Google Meet, or Teams participant list. Granola and Krisp are common bot-free picks. KukuNotes is built for the same rule on Android, Windows, and Chrome, and it does not record phone or dialer calls.

What “without a bot” means

A meeting bot joins Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams as its own participant. People see a name such as “Notetaker,” and someone often has to admit it from the waiting room. That is useful when a team wants the recorder to be obvious. It is a poor fit for a client call, an interview, or any room where an extra name changes the conversation.

A no-bot notetaker never takes that seat. It captures sound you already have: a microphone in the room, system audio on a computer, or the audio of a browser tab. Meeting notes without a bot still have to come from real audio. The difference is that the participant list does not grow. KukuNotes only works this way. The Chrome extension captures Google Meet, Zoom Web, and Teams Web. The Windows app captures system audio. The Android app uses the microphone for meetings and in-person conversations. It does not record phone or dialer calls. A speakerphone meeting in the room can be heard. A cellular call cannot.

Bot-free is not the same as private, and it is not the same as “no audio is stored.” Granola says it sends microphone and system audio to a transcription provider and does not save an audio or video file. Fireflies says Take Notes keeps a transcript, not a recording file, while its notetaker bot does save audio and video. Otter includes audio playback, so a recording is part of that product. Consent still applies: tell people you are recording and follow the rules where you are. KukuNotes listens only after you tap Start Listening. That switch controls the product. It is not legal permission.

How we checked this in November 2026

This is a category map, not a scoreboard. There is no invented rating, and we do not have a reliable search-volume number for these queries, so the order is not a traffic ranking. On 5 Nov 2026 we opened each company’s own pages and checked five things:

  • Default capture: does a bot join unless you change a setting, or is device capture the normal path?
  • Platforms, stated separately: Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and Chrome or the web.
  • Whether the vendor says it keeps a replayable audio or video file.
  • Whether a free plan is published, and what limit they print.
  • Whether phone-call claims match the vendor’s own help. KukuNotes does not record phone or dialer calls, so that cell is No.

If a page did not answer a cell, the table says “Not verified here.” If two of a vendor’s own pages disagree, the table says so instead of picking one. Circleback, Meetily, Notta Desktop, tl;dv, NoteOwl, and Weeve show up in other bot-free roundups. They are not in this table because their product pages were not part of this 5 Nov 2026 check.

Rows are the tools whose pages we opened. Columns are the questions a buyer actually has after a bot shows up in a client call. KukuNotes facts come from this site. Every other row is limited to what that company published. Other vendors’ prices are in the currency on their pricing page and can change.

Granola and phone calls

Granola’s Android launch post says phone-call capture is iOS only, and that video-call transcription belongs on the desktop app. The current phone-calls help article documents outbound calls on iOS and on Android from app version prod-261028.3 or later. It also says inbound calls are not supported on either phone. Both pages are Granola’s. This table does not collapse them into one claim.

Short picks

Use these as a shortlist, then confirm the cell you care about on the vendor’s site. A tool can be bot-free on a Mac and still put a bot in the room on Windows.

Best for Android, Windows, and Chrome, with no bot: KukuNotes

KukuNotes never joins the call. Chrome covers Meet, Zoom Web, and Teams Web. Windows covers system audio. Android covers meetings and in-person conversations through the microphone, and it does not record phone or dialer calls. A recording becomes a summary, decisions, and tasks in a Space. Pro adds the daily briefing and goal monitor. Free, Pro, and Business prices are in the table above. If you need a saved phone-call recording, choose a different tool.

Best-known bot-free desktop notes: Granola

Granola does not invite a bot. On macOS and Windows it transcribes Zoom, Meet, Teams, and other apps from system audio, and it says it does not keep an audio file. Basic is free, with unlimited meetings and 30 days of history in the app. Android is for in-person notes, not for audio inside another meeting app, and the web app does not capture. Use it when the work is on a computer and you do not need a replay. Leave the phone-call row as a conflict between Granola’s own pages.

Bot-free device capture, with an optional bot: Krisp

Krisp’s pages describe device audio on Windows and Mac, plus iOS and Android apps. Android help is about in-person recording, and it also explains how to send a Krisp bot to a meeting link. A browser extension is listed; which sites it captures was not verified here, and neither was phone-call recording. Krisp describes a free trial, not a permanent free quota we could confirm. Pick it when bot-free capture is the default and a bot remains available if you want one.

Bot-first, with a real no-bot option: Fireflies, Otter, and Fathom

Fireflies can still auto-join or be invited as fred@fireflies.ai. Desktop Take Notes captures system audio without a participant, the Chrome extension records Google Meet without a bot, and the mobile app records in person, including on Android. The free plan starts at three transcriptions, or unlimited transcripts with auto-join for signups on or after 1 September 2026, with 400 minutes of storage per seat. Take Notes can capture a call playing through the computer. That is not an Android dialer.

Otter’s calendar path is Otter Notetaker, a visible guest. The Mac and Windows desktop app can record without that guest, and the Android app records in person from the microphone. Otter does not record phone calls directly: you import a separate file, and a live Otter recording pauses during a phone call. Basic is 300 minutes a month, capped at 30 minutes per conversation. Audio playback is part of Otter, so botless does not mean “no recording file.”

Fathom offers a bot or bot-free capture. Bot-free, including transcript-only and audio, is documented on Mac and still labeled beta. The compatibility article says Windows bot-free is coming soon. A 30 October 2026 upgrade note adds a limited Microsoft Teams alpha for Windows. There is no documented Android app. The iPhone app records in person and cannot record phone calls. The free plan includes unlimited recordings. Fathom fits video calls on a Mac better than a workflow that depends on Android.

Where KukuNotes fits

Choose KukuNotes when you want meeting notes without a bot on Android, Windows, and Chrome together. It will not appear in the participant list, and it is not a dialer.

  • Chrome captures the tab for Google Meet, Zoom Web, and Teams Web.
  • Windows records system audio from the meeting app on that computer.
  • Android records meetings and in-person conversations through the microphone. It does not record phone or dialer calls.
  • The web app at platform.kukunotes.com is where you review notes. Capture stays on Chrome, Windows, and Android.

After you stop listening, the recording becomes a summary, the decisions that were actually made, and tasks with an owner when one was spoken. Those notes stay in a Space for the client, class, or project, so the next question is about that work and not about every conversation you have ever had. Pro adds a daily briefing and a goal monitor. Free includes 2 hours of notes recording and 10 hours of meeting recording. Pro is ₹499/month (₹3,600/year). Business is ₹999/month (₹7,200/year). Prices are billed in INR.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI note taker without a bot?

An AI note taker without a bot captures audio from your own device, browser tab, or system audio so nothing new appears in the Zoom, Google Meet, or Teams participant list. Bot-free describes how the tool joins the call, not whether audio is processed in the cloud. You still need consent to record.

What is the best AI note taker without a bot in 2026?

It depends on the platform. For Android, Windows, and Chrome with no invite bot, KukuNotes is built for that mix. Granola is a strong bot-free desktop notes option. Krisp offers bot-free device capture and can also send a bot. Fireflies, Otter, and Fathom are bot-first products with a separate bot-free mode. Check whether a tool is bot-free by default or only in a secondary mode. KukuNotes does not record phone or dialer calls.

Does KukuNotes join meetings as a bot?

No. KukuNotes records from your Chrome tab, Windows system audio, or Android microphone. It does not join Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams as a participant. It does not record phone or dialer calls on Android.

Is Granola bot-free?

Yes. Granola says it uses your computer's audio and does not invite a bot. Transcription help says this works for Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, and other meeting apps on macOS and Windows, and that Granola does not save an audio or video file. The web app does not capture meetings. The Android app is for in-person notes, not for audio inside other meeting apps. Phone calls are not one answer: the phone-calls help article documents outbound calls on iOS and on Android from app version prod-261028.3, and says inbound calls are not supported, while the Android launch post says phone-call capture is iOS only. Checked 5 Nov 2026.

Does Fireflies or Otter always join as a bot?

No. Both can join as a visible notetaker, and that is the path their help centers describe for automatic calendar capture. Both also document recording without that participant. Fireflies Desktop Take Notes captures system audio without adding a bot, and the Fireflies Chrome extension records Google Meet without a bot. Otter Notetaker joins as a guest, and the Otter desktop app can record on Mac and Windows without it. Fathom documents bot-free capture on Mac. On Windows, Fathom's compatibility article says the new bot-free experience is coming soon. Checked 5 Nov 2026.

Can I record a meeting without a bot on Android?

Yes, with the phone microphone and with consent. KukuNotes does this when you tap Start Listening during a meeting or an in-person conversation. Nothing is added to the Zoom, Google Meet, or Teams participant list. The KukuNotes Android app does not record phone or dialer calls. A phone app generally cannot take audio from another meeting app, so an Android recording is what the microphone hears in the room. For Meet, Zoom Web, and Teams Web, use the Chrome extension. For system audio on a computer, use the Windows app.

Does KukuNotes record phone calls?

No. KukuNotes does not record phone or dialer calls. It records meetings and in-person conversations through the Android microphone, Windows system audio, or a Chrome tab after you start listening.

Is bot-free the same as private?

No. Bot-free means no new participant is added to the call. The audio can still be uploaded and transcribed in the cloud. Consent is still required. KukuNotes listens only while Start Listening is on, and you choose which notes and tasks to share. That is not a promise that audio never leaves the device.
